Slaves working on plantations owned by wealthy members of the Cherokee Nation rise in revolt. They raid local stores for weapons, ammunition, horses, and mules, and then head towards Mexico, where slavery has been outlawed. They are hunted down by a Cherokee militia and forced to return; five are executed. The slave revolt inspires further slave rebellions in the Indian Territory, where, by the time of the Civil War, slaves form 14% of the population.
