Birth of J.B.S. Haldane (1892-1964), scientist and Marxist. An atheist, Haldane liked to say that if God did exist, his most distinctive characteristic would be “an inordinate fondness for beetles” &ndash a reference to the fact that there are more species of beetle than of any other animal life-form.
