Jane's Walk: Poor People's History of East Downtown

The walk will explore the history of poor people in East Downtown Toronto going back to Toronto's first poor house, the House of Industry. How did this poor house come to dominate the lives of Toronto's poor for over a century? What was the relationship of Toronto's wealthy residents to the unemployed who relied on the House of Industry? What happened to the slums of Cabbagetown? How did Toronto's 'skid row' come to be established in East Downtown Toronto? These are just some of the questions that we will explore during the walk.
