Society for Ecological Restoration - Symposium & AGM
October 29, 2011
Reflecting on the International Year of Forests: Restoring the Forests of Ontario Restoration of forests in Ontario has largely focused on: * Retaining what remains * Enhancing with buffers, and, * Creating new linkages within and across watersheds. However, there are a variety of stressors that are combining to make ecological restoration of forests uniquely challenging. The lingering effects of acid rain appear to be leaching calcium from Canadian Shield soils, making the future of forest regeneration of any tree species doubtful.
The theme of the symposium is to evaluate the dynamics of forest change in Ontario, understand the extent, severity and duration of the change, and propose actions to mitigate the inevitable based on principles of ecological restoration. Join us to consider what we can do as restoration ecologists to meet the challenges of the future in Ontario. Potential agenda: * Ecological history of Ontario Forests - Twilight to 2000 * Overview of the present condition * Effects of disease and insect pests * Invasive species: strategies for control * Ecological Restoration as a tool for mitigation * Strategies for regeneration of forest understory * Putting it all together - strategies for forest regeneration: * Gaps and research? * What is the vision for the future forest? * Does it include non-native species?
