A young woman, Alia, returns to her home in the palace where her mother lived and worked as a maid, dancer, and mistress, in order to uncover the secrets of her childhood life. THE SILENCES OF THE PALACE by director Moufida Al-Tlatli, set in 1950s Tunisia, is a sumptuous portrait of the beauty and the horror of women’s lives as they face patriarchal violence inside the palace walls against the backdrop of French colonial oppression. Silence is a strong theme that begins and ends the film, symbolising both oppression and resistance to it.
Discussion to follow.
