Sustainability House - A building of the future designed today

March 24, 2011

Abstract

Lambton College will be constructing a “Sustainable Smart Home” utilizing a variety of sustainable materials and construction techniques, while also using a number of different renewable power and solar sources to heat and cool the building thus conserving energy and reducing the carbon footprint. The design not only includes different mechanisms for generating heat and power but also various control mechanisms to monitor and control electricity and fossil fuel usage. Ventilation within the building also has some unique design features that will be discussed. We will be comparing the various design and operating aspects of the house with normal building design and construction techniques.
Information will be presented on how the SSH will be used as a:

-Teaching lab for the Alternative Energy Engineering Technology (ALTE) program Hydrogen Fuel Cells
-Teaching lab for the Instrument and Control Engineering Technology (ICET) program
-Teaching lab for Construction Trades to investigate Sustainable Building Practices
-Research center for the Renewable Energy Conversion and Storage Research Project

The Lambton College Strategic Plan was the instigator to much of what has happened with regards to the “Sustainable Smart Home”.
