People have been aware of the problem of endangered species for decades, yet animal life continues to be threatened by human activities. These short films represent different attitudes towards the issue.

Age of the Buffalo (1964, 14min, Austin Campbell) A vivid recollection of the free west of the North American Indian and the vast herds of buffalo that once thundered across the plains.

Arkelope – (1994, 5min, Roslyn Schwartz) A seriously funny animated look at endangered species and human passivity in the face of the ubiquitous TV set.

Loon Dreaming – (2002, 7min, Iriz Pääbo) Loon Dreaming opens with loons gracefully riding the waves. Then suddenly we see the world through the eyes of one of these spectacular birds.

Pocket Desert – Confessions of a Snake Killer – (1999, 24min, Teresa Marshall and Craig Berggold) The pocket desert has become one of the most endangered ecosystems in the country with more than 250 rare and endangered species. Superb wildlife cinematography and rare archival film clips combine with dramatic personal stories in this compelling documentary about a culture in conflict with wild habitats.

Green Screens partners films from the NFB with experts and panellists selected by the Canadian Institute for Environmental Law and Policy. If you are interested in the environment, Green Screens will entertain and inform you.

CIELAP receives support from the RBC Blue Water Project for Green Screens.
