Screaming Queens screening
January 31, 2011
The Trans Inclusion Group hosts a FREE screening of SCREAMING QUEENS: The Riot at Compton's Cafeteria.
Everyone welcome. Allies welcome. Free food and talk included.
SCREAMING QUEENS tells the little-known story of one of the first acts of collective, violent resistance to the social oppression of trans and queer people in the United States. It's the story of the 1966 riot in San Francisco's impoverished Tenderloin neighbourhood, three years before the famous Stonewall riots. Though not as large as Stonewall, this riot was a turning point in a decades-long process of trans community formation and political mobilization; impacting changes in medical practices, urban politics, neighbourhood geography and public consciousness. The film focuses on the experiences of the rioters themselves, connecting the riot's story to the anti-war, civil rights and sexual liberation movement. Screaming Queens questions whose leadership gets remembered through history while possibly asking the audience: what tactics will work today in the fight for trans human rights?
