EECOM 2011 - Exploring the Socioecological in Education and Culture: Becoming Active Participants in Change

June 08, 2011

The 2011 EECOM conference will focus on exploring the issues of learning and being active in society AND our environment. The word "Socioecological" attempts to foreground the intertwined nature of environmental education with cultural and social justice issues. We need to continue to consider our environment and our place in it as integrated. Societies determine the use (and abuse) of our environment and, as such, it is imperative to (re)consider the environment in our socially and culturally designed practices. Colonisation is a term appropriately applied to cultural activity, however it can also be aptly applied to the forces of power/oppression/resistance/habitat destruction that interfere within our natural environment. Themes within the conference will include: • socioecological pedagogies Teaching/learning strategies with a focus on environmental, cultural, and/or social justice. • place-based learning Teaching/learning strategies with a focus on place and/or outdoor education. • food/agriculture/sustainable living practices • activism and youth/community engagement • leadership development • diversity/species at risk

The call for presentations, workshops, and participation will be made in September 2010. Registration will open March 2011.
