La politique que l�Occident a adopt�e envers la Birmanie au cours des vingt derni�res ann�es est un �chec. En effet, l�imposition d�embargos �conomiques et l�emp�chement de l�aide humanitaire et de l�aide au d�veloppement n�ont certainement pas favoris� l��mergence de la d�mocratie dans l�un des pays les plus pauvres, les plus isol�s et les plus sujets � des conflits dans le monde. Qui plus est, on a pratiquement fait fi des nombreux conflits arm�s qui d�chiraient ce pays et de ses probl�mes sociaux et �conomiques aigus.

L�auteur et historien Thant Myint-U, ancien haut fonctionnaire de l�Organisation des Nations Unies (ONU), prononcera au Centre de recherches pour le d�veloppement international (CRDI) une conf�rence publique au cours de laquelle il pr�conisera une nouvelle fa�on d�aborder les probl�mes de la Birmanie prenant sa source dans une compr�hension plus rigoureuse de l�histoire r�cente du pays, de la nature particuli�re de la dictature militaire en place et de l��volution rapide du contexte r�gional.
