Toronto Wide Organizing Meeting
January 15, 2019
Despite the setback with Doug Ford's Bill 47, we protected modest but important gains for workers. However, Ford tabled new and dangerous legislation - Bill 66 - that cuts important regulations and threatens to make it harder for workers to unionize and to get proper overtime pay for duly-worked hours.
Meanwhile, the Federal government has taken some modest but crucial steps toward legislating $15 and Fairness for federally-regulated workers (those who work in sectors that cross provincial borders such as telecommunications, banking, airlines, shipping, transportation, and more). As of January 1, 2019, almost 900,000 federally-regulated workers across Canada will have the legislated right to three (3) paid sick days; and to equal pay for equal work for part-time, contract, and temporary workers. If the experience in Ontario is any indication, we will need to fight hard to protect and extend these wins.
