1st Annual Human Rights in Markham: Building a Community with Mutual Respect
December 09, 2017
This event kicks off a year-long campaign to mark the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
On December 10, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in order to recognize the freedom, justice and inalienable rights everyone is inherently entitled to as human beings. In the City of Markham, the fostering of social inclusion and acknowledging Human Rights is a core belief. Their internationally recognized Diversity Action Plan has focused on measures to ensure Markham is welcoming and inclusive.
The City of Markham is a signatory of the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination (CCMARD), CCMARD‘s main objective is to promote and protect human rights and divesity. As part of their ongoing commitment to human rights, the City of Markham and the Race Relations Committee will be proclaiming December 10th as International Human Rights Day and will be hosting a flag raising ceremony.
We are one in dignity and Rights.
The event will bring together the residents of Markham and surrounding communities to increase their knowledge regarding Human Rights in Canada and around the world. The event will have engaging speakers including Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Regional Councillor Joe Li and Councillor Kanapathi
