A conversation about race, segregation and memory
On Wednesday, November 15, we invite you to join us for a moderated discussion about racism in Canada, both historically and today. Share your perspectives and learn from others in small-group discussions in an informal setting.
Viola Desmond’s Canada: A History of Blacks and Racial Segregation in the Promised Land by Graham Reynolds is the springboard for our discussion. In his book, Reynolds looks at differences between racism experienced in Canada and the United States. We will consider whether the experience of "polite racism" in Canada differs from racism experienced in the United States.
To shape our discussion, we will focus on current social movements and examine the use of protest, rallies and social media as communication tools.

Join Program Interpreters in the Canadian Journeys and Breaking the Silence galleries for a series of mini-talks covering three Black history topics: the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, the Underground Railroad, and Viola Desmond’s experience of racial segregation in Canada. Explore how these historical stories fit into the larger narrative of Canadian history and have relevance to current conversations about, and experiences of, racism in Canada.
