Join us for the 2017 Reclaim the Streets Rally and March in memory of women who have died on the streets - Stop the Violence, Reclaim the Streets!

October 19, 2017

On Oc 19th, we will march in the Downtown East neighbourhood of Toronto in memory of Carolyn Connolly and to honour too many other women, friends and family that we have lost over the years. We march against the many daily occurrences of violence on our streets - the targeting of homeless, street-involved, racialized, sex working, and Indigenous women, two-spirit, and trans folks. We march to demand better - an end to this violence and better housing, support and services that everyone deserves!

In August 2008, Carolyn Connolly, an Indigenous woman, was found dead in an alleyway at Sherbourne and Shuter Street. She is one of the hundreds of Indigenous women and girls who have gone missing or been murdered in this country over the last 30 years, many of whom experienced the same racism, poverty, homelessness, criminalization and violence that people in the downtown east of Toronto face every day.

Street involved women face extreme sexual and physical violence in the neighbourhood, compounded by the lack of low threshold shelter beds and lack of affordable housing. On any given day, women's shelters are 100% full, forcing women onto the streets and into extremely unsafe situations. In addition, the opiate crisis is further endangering the lives of many women in this neighbourhood.

We march to Reclaim the Streets and Demand:
* Immediate action to respond to the opioid crisis
* Safe space now: Open low threshold emergency shelter for womn in the downtown east immediately
