Why Should I Care About The State of Journalism?
January 25, 2017
Freedom of the press is one of the foundations of our democracy but the future of journalism is uncertain. The industry is facing unprecedented challenges. Traditional media companies are looking for new revenue models to stay afloat while the public has gotten used to getting news for free. Independent media organizations struggle with funding, resources, and breaking through the noise. At the same time, the rapid spread of fake news has left many people wondering what's real and what "news" they can trust.
What happens to our democracy when investigative journalism declines and fake news and echo chambers impact worldviews, actions and votes? Are we really in a post-truth society?
Susanna Kelley, a veteran political and investigative reporter and current Editor-in-Chief for Ontario News Watch, David Gray-Donald, a freelance journalist and board member for The Media Co-op, and Justin Dallaire, editor of the Ryerson Review of Journalism, will be joining us on January 25 to lead a discussion about the state of journalism and where we go from here.
