July 20, 1944
A plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler ends in failure. The plot is the culmination of the efforts of the German Resistance to overthrow the Nazi regime. The failure of both the assassination attempt and the seizure of power which was planned to follow it leads to the arrest of at least 7,000 people by the Gestapo. About 5,000 people are executed, resulting in the destruction of much of the resistance movement in Germany. Related Topics: Anti-Nazi Resistance
