Abstract: This is a summary of the analysis done over the past year by Floyd Howlett, United Church missionary in Japan. It gives data on the economic, physical and political conditions that cause a rapid decrease in small and medium farms in Canada. Between 1931 and 1971 the percentage of total population in Canada on the farm decreased from 31.7% to 6.9%. The decrease in the number of farms in Canada from 1966 to 1971 was 64,394, over 10,000 farms per year. The major organization corporate and government bodies and their position in relation to this condition are discussed. The overall analysis shows a strong support by government and large corporations to promote agribusiness. A short theological reflection is followed by fifteen strategy statements for making small and medium sized farms more viable. Subject Headings |
