Abstract:
A new branch of PEN international for English speaking Canadian authors was recently established in Toronto, with Margaret Atwood as president. The PEN Centre for French-speaking authors is in Montreal.
PEN's primary concern is the imprisonment of many authors around the world for their political views. One of its principles is "the unhampered transmission of thought within each nation and between nations." PEN declares itself for a free press and oppose peacetime censorship.
The Toronto centre adopted two writer-prisoners in North Vietnam and uruguay and was successful in obtaining their release. They have now adopted six more imprisoned writers.
This abstract was published in the Connexions Digest in 1986.
