Highlights: The board and staff of aprovincial organization was meeting to do a strategic planning retreat. Its board had been experiencing great pain as the organizatgion had reached a time when its old operating patterns were no longer working and opinions on new possibilities were experienced as threatening or terrifying. During the first session, one woman spoke up from the back of the room in a loud, gravelly, aggressive manner, pushing her point of view with the expectation of argument. As we facilitated the process of the retreat, respect for each person's ideas began to build and the remarkable consensus underlying the group's creativity began to be evident. Her voice quality and style changed measurably. By the last session, she was offering innovative suggestions in a relaxes style and gently naming the group's consensus. The change inher behaviour was a barometer of the group's experience, enabling them to make some difficult decisons about the future.
