Abstract:
Lakeland Environmental and Agricultural Protection Society (LEAPS) is largely an umbrella organization, with an initial membership of over 200 people involved in opposing the Cold Lake Oil Sands project as proposed by Imperial Oil. Members consist of representatives from trappers associations, fishermen, farmers, members of the Metis settlement, the Cold Lake Band plus urban residents of the area. LEAPS is opposing the development on the basis of negative impact on communities, agriculture (escalating land and services costs), and environmental damage (SO2, lowered lake levels, heavy metal contamination, etc.).
This organization no longer exists.
