Abstract:
Paul MacEwan NDP M.L.A. for Cape Breton has written an account of the early years of unions (1879-1939) in Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, the coal miners strike and steelworkers of 1923 and the last great strike in 1925 of the former. The revolutionary spirit in the 1920's in the aftermath of Russia and Winnipeg was still strong in Cape Breton. The pivotal role of the workers, not the union executive, in setting the tone for the many agitations and the company's policy of starving the strikers into submission is told. The book reveals that our assumptions that our history is bland and non confrontational is incorrect. This is one of the few volumes to address the legacy of class conflict in Cape Breton.
