Civil liberties body condemns sign law
Year Published: 1992Resource Type: Article Cx Number: CX4470 Abstract: Quebec's French-only sign law has been condemned by the international human rights organization Article 19, a group which defends freedom of information and expression. Quebec's law allows only the French language on signs outside commercial premises. On inside signs, French must predominate. "If one significant sector of a community is precluded from expressing itself in a particular language, then that is a form of censorship, absolutely," said Frances D'Souza, director of Article 19. The section on Canada in Article 19's report also expresses concern about concentration of newspaper ownership and about the lack of power in voluntary press councils. Subject Headings |
