Furniture industry hurting
Year Published: 1990Resource Type: Article Cx Number: CX4096 Abstract: The Canadian Council of Furniture Manufacturers says that the Canadian furniture industry is in dire straits because of the free trade agreement, and that it may ask the government for emergency protection against the yearly tariff reductions which are designed to eliminate tariffs entirely by 1993. According to the Council, 24 Canadian furniture companies have gone bankrupt since the agreement came into effect, and another 32 firms have stopped producing furniture. Imports of U.S. furniture have increased 40 per cent, while exports to the U.S. have gone down 7 per cent. About 4,700 of 60,000 jobs have been lost so far in the industry. |
