Abstract:
The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) produced this slideshow packet that is designed to inform and stimulate discussion on the crisis in Central America. AFSC is a Quaker organization supported by people of different faiths who are concerned about social justice and humanitarian service.
The slideshow consists of 131 slides, a 25-minute cassette tape, script instructions and background materials. It offers a combination of information and analysis on the events that have led to the turmoil in this region. A historical overview of the Central American crisis is presented from the point of view of those most affected: peasants, workers, students and church people. This is followed by a closer look at El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua and includes information on the popular movements for social change and the perspectives of church people. There is an examination of U.S. policy towards Central America and the present role played by U.S. military and economic powers.
The slide-tape show challenges citizens and policy makers to understand the legitimate aspirations of Central Americans for self-determination and independence.
Not for purchase. Rental $15/wk. and $5 single showing.
