The Legal Resource Centre maintains a multi-media collection of legal and law-related sources for non-lawyers. The collection is particularly strong in criminal and family law, native rights and public legal education. The Centre also has a collection of law-related fiction and literature for ages four to adults.

The library provides a full range of services. Library staff work with the Centre's programming, consulting and communications specialists to provide the most complete information possible. The library also serves a clearinghouse function, through information exchange and the selective dissemination of information to users.

The material available may be purchased or borrowed. This material includes: books, periodicals, videotapes, audiotapes, films, filmstrips, slides, overhead transparencies, kits and games.

The Centre will assist groups in conducting training programs, workshops, seminars, conferences or other events of an educational nature. The degree of involvement of the Centre staff varies depending upon the event itself and the needs of the program participants. Educational techniques include role-playing, mock trials, exercise, readings, field trips, discussions, audio-visual presentations, games and simulations.

The Centre provides a "speakers bureau" and consulting service which consists of lawyers and specialists available throughout the province of Alberta to assist as speakers or resource people.

The "Resources News" is a monthly newsletter which keeps individuals and organizations around Alberta up-to-date with the law-related programs and services in their region.

The LEGAL RESOURCE CENTRE is a non-profit public legal education service. It was developed to assist Albertans in gaining access to the information and skills needed to undertake a wide variety of law-related activities. The CENTRE also acts as a clearinghouse for information on law-related activities, so that it can assist in building networks between people with similar needs, interests, and concerns.

Resources News is published eleven times each year by the CENTRE. Some of the issues focussed on by the magazine include: Law and the Elderly (April, 1982); Income Tax (March, 1982); Women and the Law (Feb., 1982); Children and the Law (Jan., 1982); Law, Literature and Copyright (Dec., 1981); and Land Law (Nov., 1981),

The CENTE's Youth Programme uses role-play to teach children about the law and law-related issues. Some of these role-play workshops include:

Creative Kids Sessions - through drama, the children examine theway a people's culture, history, and law determine their concept of private property,

Bottom Line - in this workshop, children examine political process and the law affecting the rights of children

as well as Mock Trial, Firearms/Gun Control, Community Action, and Basic Law.

A recently-initiated workshop enables children (using role-play) to explore the traditional Native justice system; they then go on to explore what happened when the traditional system was replaced by white man's law. Written materials related to the issue of children and the law are also available from the Youth Programme.

The LEGAL RESOURCE CENTRE is a non-profit public legal education and information service. It actively supports the establishment of community development corporations (CDCs) by providing library, consulting, and programming services to those investigating this form of community economic structure. A team of lawyers, educators, and librarians from the CENTRE is available to consult with local individuals and groups of interested and involved in community-based activities. The CENTRE also assists groups in conducting training programmes, workshops, seminars, conferences, and other events of educational nature.

For instance, the CENTRE ran a workshop on the legal ramification of CDCs at a Community Economic Development Converence sponsored by the Edmonton Social Planning Council in November, 1982.

A bibliography of materials on Community Development Corportions is available from the CENTRE.
