Abstract:  Commodity Notes is a series that provides background analysis and current reports on a number of key international commodities. This one on Cocoa shows that 80% of the world production comes from Brazil, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Cameron. On the other hand, the United States, the European Economic Community and the Soviet Union account for two thirds of the world's consumption. The paper looks at 1) history, 2) development of Cocoa trade - and how this was hampered by the position of imperial powers and corporations in the exchange system; 3) types of marketing in producer countires - and their responsibilities; 4) relationships between governments and cocoa industry in producer countries; 5) shipping - looks at loading and discharging parts; 6) processing in producer countries; 7) prices -supply and demand; 8) business involved with production, marketing and distribution - location of offices, how integrated and products; 9) international cocoa agreements; 10) Agreement and the New International Economic Order.
