The Canadian News Synthesis Project journal presents current news coverage to show major trends in Canada and Latin America.

Abstract:  The June issue covers the Habitat and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development conferences. An overview of the Nuclear power debate currently going on in Canada and the U.S. is given with indication of the growing pressures to use nuclear energy over fossil fuels. Noted is the growing U.S. concern over the Saskatchewan nationalisation of the potash industry. Foreign investment shows that in the past 25 years Canada had a deficit, of $30 billion in its balance of goods and services with the U.S. and a deficit of over $6 billion in merchandise trade. At the same time, U.S. ownership of Canadian industry and resources increased tens of billions over American investment in Canada while the cost in interest, dividend and service payment doubled foreign capital entering the country. The excessive spending on the Olympics is examined in relation to their drastic social consequences. In the insert Inside Report the Latin American military dictatorships are analysed in relation to American foreign policy. The militancy of Canadian Alcan workers and the response of that corporation are studied.
