NEWS & LETTERS, April - May 2007California protestINTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY, March 8, was celebrated by a rally in Oakland, Cal. demanding that care be recognized as work. Nella Myhand, local environmental justice activist, spoke about the problems she encountered trying to care for her 83-year-old mother. Others pointed to the difficulties immigrant parents face, especially when the Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids have been breaking families apart. Still others linked child and elder care to the broader recognition of humanity of all members of society. The cuts for all social services were linked to the bloated military budget. |
