Silence sits heavily on my mind

  casting out all fears

  but bringing tears

   to my eyes when I think about

   what silence has accomplished over the years

 ...and silence never freed a human soul

 ...and silence never saved a Jew

   nor could it save me or you

 ...and silence never freed a slave

   nor found a cure for AIDS

 Only those who had the guts to speak

made sure that history did not repeat.
