Struggles in the Philippines face U.S. troops, repression

May Day 2002 was reborn as an arena of struggle in Manila this year, as the Gloria Arroyo government in the Philippines struggled to assert its legitimacy in the face of economic crisis and mass unrest. During a visit to the Philippines, the author met with human rights, women and labor activists as well as students with a passion for revolutionary philosophy. This took place when the U.S.-led military exercises there were in their fifth month.
