NEWS & LETTERS, DECEMBER 2003HUSSEIN'S CAPTURE: PUT HIM, AND HIS U.S. ALLIES, ON TRIALFormer Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein was captured today near the city of Tikrit. At the same time that we denounce the U.S. and British imperialist invasion and occupation of that country, Marxist-Humanists in the U.S. join the glee with which the Iraqi people greeted this news. A genuine trial of Hussein by the Iraqis is sure to bring forth the full extent of the bloody oppression of women, Kurds, Marsh Arabs, Shi'ites and others during his decades-long reign. A full accounting of all nations which supported Saddam Hussein and the Ba'athist regime is sure to include the U.S. The Bush administration must not be allowed to undermine this accounting, as it did with the International War Crimes Tribunal's trial of Serb ex-President Slobodan Milosevic for atrocities perpetrated against Bosnians, Croatians, and Kosovars. The January-February News & Letters will feature ramifications of today's developments. We encourage readers to return to some of our previous discussions of the U.S. invasion and occupation as well as of the rule of Hussein and resistance to it:
