SPRiNG - Whose Job is the "Green" Job? Moving Beyond the Voluntary and Advancing Sustainability by Leveraging "Green" Responsibilities
"Employee engagement" is a term sustainability professionals are familiar with -- a means of motivating others within their business or organization toward advancing "green" initiatives.
There are the voluntary measures employees may take (e.g. powering down their computers, recycling waste paper, choosing to print 2-sided, etc.) but these can be piecemeal and difficult to measure. To truly advance sustainability, and do it efficiently, one must target those employees in positions of greatest influence.
Who are these key players? What are their departments? What role do they play in advancing sustainability? When do voluntary measures become "green" responsibilities?
During this session of SPRiNG, Roya Khaleeli will begin by introducing this critical issue. Roya's talk will lead into a roundtable dialogue with the attending sustainability professionals, creating a forum wherein more insightful and critical understanding will come to light.

You must RSVP to attend. Please contact James Watson (information below).

Be The Change Film Series: Gasland
Gasland examines "the largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history" that has swept across the United States. The Halliburton -developed drilling technology of "fracking" or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a "Saudia Arabia of natural gas" just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called Gasland. Part verite travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown, part showdown.

Tommy Douglas put Canada's Healthcare on the Wrong Path
Did Canada take a wrong turn in the 1960s when, with Saskatchewan leading the way, it created a system of universal public health insurance? Was Canadian "medicare" a great step forward in the provision of a fundamental social service - Canada’s biggest and best social program? Or did it become a bloated albatross, a bureaucratic approach to health care that created inefficiencies, rationing, and mediocrity? Was Tommy Douglas, father of the distinctive Canadian approach to health care, actually the greatest Canadian, or was he a deluded socialist?

Moderator: J.L. Granatstein

Speaking for the motion will be Michael Bliss, University Professor emeritus at the University of Toronto who has long been one of Canada’s most prolific and prominent historians. He has written very widely in the history of medicine, about Canadian politics, and on current Canadian issues, including health care. He is currently president of the American Osler Society and has recently published a memoir, Writing History: A Professor’s Life.

Speaking against the motion will be Greg Marchildon, who holds the Canada Research Chair at the Johnson-Shoyama School of Public Policy, University of Regina. Dr. Marchildon served as the CEO of the Romanow Royal Commission on Health Care and has extensively written and spoken on the key issues facing Canada's medicare.

REEP Workshop -- Water Softening and Conditioning Options
Waterloo Region gets the majority of its drinking water from the ground. This 'hard' mineral-rich water leaves spots on our glasses, does not allow soap to lather well, and leaves lime deposits in our coffee pots, kettles and water heaters.

Workshop includes:
* Introduction to rain water management
* Overview of hard and soft water and the environmental impacts of softening water
* Review of water softeners available that reduce water, energy and salt use
* Review of salt-free conditioning options

This workshop is part of the RAIN program, which promotes an ecological approach to stormwater management.

Commission for Quality Public Services and Tax Fairness
The McGuinty government is planning painful cuts to health care, education, and social services (as high as 33 percent in some Ministries ). From the smallest women's shelter to the largest hospital, no public service is safe.
Under these mounting attacks, the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) approached a national advocacy group called the Public Services Foundation of Canada (PSFC) to hold a Commission on Quality Public Services and Tax Fairness.
Last September, the PSFC agreed to work with OPSEU to hold province-wide hearings to hear from people who value public services and tax fairness as a way to pay for preserving those services our communities rely on.
We will hold public hearings and town hall forums across the province where citizens of Ontario, from every walk of life, are encouraged to make submissions.

Between Two Worlds - The Jewish American Cultural Wars
Between tradition and change between loyalty and dissent. The film, Between Two Worlds, begins at the 2009 San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, and the fallout over the screening of a documentary about activist Rachel Corrie, which is also critical of Israel. The event released a flood of emotions, with charges of anti-Semitism and self-hatred, McCarthyism and witch-hunts. Filmed in the United States and Israel, Between Two Worlds is a personal documentary that explores the divisions that are redefining Jewish identity and politics in America and beyond. The filmmakers' own families are battlegrounds over loyalty to Israel, interpretations of the Holocaust, intermarriage and a conversion to Islam, and a secret Communist past.

Screening to be followed by a moderated conversation with the audience.

Director: Deborah Kaufman & Alan Snitow, USA, 2011, 70 Minutes, English

Film screening is sponsored by Beit Zatoun and United Jewish People's Order (UJPO) www.ujpo.org. UJPO-Toronto is a leading progressive voice in making secular Jewish Life, culture and practices accessible. UJPO embraces justice in all its forms.

Stop Canada’s Environmental Injustice: Building for the Future
Challenges to Harper’s plans for more pipelines to export dirty Canadian tar-sands oil; opposition to mining injustice; protection of Ontario farmland from mega quarry destruction, safeguarding secure public water supplies, and more: environmentalists are active in many fields. As we approach the June 2012 Rio+20 world conference on sustainable development, how can we best link and advance our common struggle for environmental and climate justice in Canada and internationally.

Speakers include Ben Powless, Indigenous Environmental Network; Raúl Burbano from Common Frontiers, Brent Patterson, Council of Canadians (National Office), both just returned from the world Thematic Social Forum: Capitalist Crisis, Social and Environmental Justice in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Seeds for Change 2012 Conference: GMOs & the Right to Choose
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are on the menu of topics at Cowichan Green Community’s (CGC’s) upcoming 3rd annual Seeds for Change Speaker Series: GMOs & the Right to Choose.
In a climate of misinformation around what is or is not a GMO and the lack of transparency regarding GMO labeling, this conference seeks to highlight examples of how citizens and communities within Canada are working together to choose alternatives. Examples will be showcased through a series of speakers and a panel discussion, featuring Jon Steinman of Deconstructing Dinner, Jean Crowder, MP Nanaimo-Cowichan, Thierry Vrain, co-owner of Innisfree Farm in Courtenay, John Wilcox of Duck Creek Farm and more.
This event will complement the end of CGC’s 30 Day Live GMO Free Challenge - an education challenge intended to inspire the community to live GMO free. From discussions of GE-Free Zones to the labeling of GMOs, this conference seeks to provide a forum through which consumers and producers can be brought up to date on the latest information regarding GMOs and if so desired, how they can be avoided.
Entrance to this conference will be by donation. Cowichan Green Community encourages those interested to pre-register as space is limited.
CGC will provide coffee, tea and light snacks. Farm’s Gate Catering will be on site serving-up a fabulous local lunch for $15.00. Participants are also welcome to BYOL.

Climate Change at the Frontiers of Ethics
Dale Jamieson, environmental studies and philosophy prof. at New York University, explores the ethics behind our failure to collectively respond to the threat of climate change.
Why have we failed to act collectively in response to climate change? Economists' efforts to show that it is in our interest to respond aggressively to climate change assume a set of ethical ideals that don't seem to be motivating. What other ethical ideals might motivate us to act.

Palestine and the Great Games: at the Periphery and in the Centre
In this wide ranging and far reaching examination of the role of Palestine in the Great Games, the metaphor for grand geopolitical strategy involving nations and peoples first introduced by Zbigniew Brzezinski, in his 1998 book, The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy and It's Geostrategic Imperatives, author and journalist Eric Walberg paints a broad canvas putting Palestine both at the centre and the periphery of 100 years of modern and postmodern colonialism. Drawn from extensive travels and research outlined in his most recent book, Postmodern Imperialism: Geopolitics and the Great Game, Walberg shows how Palestine, despite its helplessness, is in a sense the most powerful player in the Great Games and its fate holds the key to the endgame.

About
Canadian Eric Walberg is known worldwide as a journalist specializing in the Middle East, Central Asia and Russia. A graduate of University of Toronto and Cambridge in economics, he has been writing on East-West relations since the 1980s.

Rally: "Battle for the future of Mount Pleasant"
RAMP has documented many irregularities and problems in the process leading up to the February 27 rezoning hearing for the proposed RIZE tower development by Rize Alliance Properties Ltd. It sacrifices Mount Pleasant's "heritage heart" for a projected $27 million profit , making the project a lucrative deal for the developer, but an unfair deal for the community. After millions of public dollars and thousands of staff and volunteer hours of spent to develop the Mount Pleasant Community Plan, t he architect, developer, and planner have used a biased interpretation of the plan to justify greater height and density . They have disregard ed strong community opposition, used incorrect and misleading images in a staff reports to City Council , published incorrect information on the City website, and presented a flawed final report to Council. Yet on the basis of that report , Council still voted 8-2 in favor of referring the proposal to a public hearing for final approval. It has not escaped notice that Council referred to hearing this controversial project fostered under the City's recently-fired Director of Planning (Brent Toderian ) on the very day the City fired him.

The upcoming rally and public hearing will be opportunities for media and the public to learn more about the serious problems with the planning and consultation processes in Vancouver today, and perhaps learn what must be fixed.

FREE Screening of "Generation M" Documentary!
A free screening of a documentary about sexism and gender bias in our media and culture. To be followed by a discussion led by Michele Landsberg, writer, social activist, feminist, and author of Writing the Revolution.

GENERATION M : Misogyny in Media & Culture

Despite the achievements of the women's movement over the past four decades, misogyny remains a persistent force in our culture. In this important documentary, Thomas Keith, professor of philosophy at California State University-Long Beach, looks specifically at misogyny and sexism in mainstream American media, exploring how negative definitions of femininity and hateful attitudes toward women get constructed and perpetuated at the very heart of our popular culture.

The film tracks the destructive dynamics of misogyny across a broad and disturbing range of media phenomena: including the hyper-sexualization of commercial products aimed at girls, the explosion of violence in video games aimed at boys, the near-hysterical sexist rants of hip-hop artists and talk radio shock jocks, and the harsh, patronizing caricatures of femininity and feminism that reverberate throughout the mainstream of American popular culture.

Along the way, Generation M forces us to confront the dangerous real-life consequences of misogyny in all its forms - making a compelling case that when we devalue more than half the population based on gender, we harm boys and men as well as women and girls.

Solidarity Against Austerity: Fight Poverty, Demand Living Income, Housing, Public Services for All!
Join the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) and allies for a march and rally on Friday, March 16th, in the lead up to the 2012 Provincial Budget. The McGuinty government has hired former head of the TD bank, Don Drummond, to propose and provide the basis for massive social cutbacks in their 2012 budget. It is being drafted as the Provincial component of the austerity agenda that is gathering force across Canada and internationally. City Hall, Queen`s Park and Ottawa are delivering austerity, but clearly it is being cooked-up on Bay Street by bankers like Drummond to the benefit of their rich friends.

We have to stop the cuts and fight for what poor and working people need!
The measures they intend to hit us with will fall on top of the losses we have already faced.

For poor people and workers in this province, it has been a constant state of crisis. McGuinty is now preparing to make this situation much worse.

On March 16, we will be rallying at an Ontario Government location but taking our march to Toronto`s financial centre where the real decisions are being made by and for the '1%'.

We will be marching to oppose austerity measures but also to demand the reversing of previous cutbacks, the right to a living income, the right to affordable and accessible housing, and for good quality public services for all! We will be marching against the kind of society Drummond and the rich are creating, and for one that meets the needs and improves the lives of all of us!

Community March Against Racism
Family-friendly festivities! Bring your neighbours, banners and drums!

March 21, the International Day for the Elimination of Racism, marks the anniversary of the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre in South Africa when police opened fire on hundreds of South Africans protesting against Apartheid's passbook laws, killing 67 and wounding 186. Collectively, we join friends and allies around the world to mark this day. By speaking the truth about racism in Canada, we aim to wake up others to the need for a new anti-racist consciousness.

We know of the historic injustices this country was founded on, including the forced confinement of Indigenous children in residential schools and Japanese children in internment camps.

In our daily lives, racist stereotyping, profiling, silencing, marginalization, scapegoating and dehumanization permeates the media, education system, policing institutions, workplaces, and our relationships. And in the past few months we have been outraged at the white supremacist hate crimes of groups such as Blood and Honor in our very own neighbourhoods, and the general silence surrounding this horrific level of violence.

We encourage our friends and allies to be pro-active in countering racism, to strengthen our communities of solidarity and resistance, and to join us on March 18th to celebrate the dignity, strength, and resilience of our communities.

FilKONtario - Science Fiction Folk Music Festival
What is Filk?
. . . A subject of some argument: ongoing, loud and opinionated argument at that.
The easy answer is that it is science fiction folk music, which may explain nothing! Okay, so it's music based on themes in science fiction and/or fantasy writing; or on the space program, modern technology, computers, cats, food... or just about any subject people in SF fandom like to talk about.
It's also primarily "folk"-ish in style: mostly the lyrics are important and have something to say that is worth hearing. But the musical style may be anything from "trad" to last week's top of the chart. Not surprisingly, there is a strong influence of popular musi

Ontario Day of Action Against Cuts
The province continues to hand out billions of dollars in corporate tax cuts through the front door while public and private sector jobs are disappearing through the back door. The Ontario government is preparing to table a slash-and-burn budget in late March or early April that will be guided by the hundreds of cuts that former TD Bank Economist Don Drummond is expected to propose later this month.

Take these extra steps to help make the Day of Action against cuts a success:

* Pass an emergency motion at your meeting to support the April 21 Day of Action;
* Appoint a staff member too coordinate the mobilization of your union, labour council or organization;
* Outreach to community allies, in particular any local Occupy Activists, to connect our issues in fight for equity and social justice;
* Bring your own signs, banners and union flags to show support; and
* Secure funding from your union, labour council or organization for buses from your community.

Labour Councils should approach affiliates for support in funding buses to Toronto. However, in circumstances where financial resources are lacking, the OFL can be approached to provide financial support. However, all subsidized buses must be filled!

Questions about mobilizing and logistics should be directed to: Laurie Hardwick, Director of Organization Services 416-571-3087 or lhardwick@ofl.ca
Buses should be registered with the OFL: Carrol Anne Sceviour (416) 443-7670 or csceviour@ofl.ca

The R3 Earth Day Celebration
R3
Earth Day Weekend Celebration 2012
"Green, isn't about the green stuff"

... The R3 History & Cause

The Grand Barn once again presents The R3 Earth Day Celebrations. The R3 was started last year in 2011 as part of a homage to the G3 Concert Series organized by Joe Satriani, as well as the 3 R's mantra; Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We should employ this mantra as much as possible in our lives.

This celebration will help us to learn how to be responsible for my own actions, and how to minimize the foot print we leave behind. Our guest speakers, will educate us on how to be responsible global citizens. While giving you an opportunity to connect with those that feel the same way.

Our mission is to raise awareness of, and the funding for, teaching those who want to learn how to sustain our earth using a greener approach. We chose to have it coincide with Earth Day, so that we may lend our voices to resonate on a global scale. The R3 accomplishes this by hosting our Eco-Fest grassroots community movement, at our campground which has survived on these principal bases for over 20 years.

$10 at the door with advance reservations by Sunday April 15, 2012
(You must email loretta@thegrandbarn.com or events@thegrandbarn to get on the guest list for this price at the door.)

Montreal International Conference on Degrowth in the Americas
Twenty years after the Earth Summit in Rio, the linkage of sustainable development to economic growth requires profound rethinking. It has not offered a convincing solution to one of the most dramatic crises in history: how to avert ecological collapse while enhancing social justice and improving life’s prospects. In advance of Rio plus 20, our Conference seeks to challenge and move beyond the sustainable development agenda. A degrowth perspective will help us visualize and build towards a truly prosperous world.
Drawing from previous degrowth conferences in Paris and Barcelona in 2008 and 2010 respectively, the Montreal conference will focus on the particular situations and dynamics of the Americas. What does degrowth mean for our Hemisphere with its rich geographical, cultural, social and economic diversity? How can degrowth models apply to different contexts from the Arctic to Tierra del Fuego? What does degrowth mean for the indigenous peoples of the Americas and their aspirations for their lands and peoples? How can degrowth concepts be made audible, understandable and acceptable to rich North Americans?
This gathering will bring together academics, activists, environmentalists and indigenous peoples to discuss our needs and hopes for diverse and more equitable societies in the Americas, on a post-growth healing earth.

BIOREGIONALISM is the practice of intimately exploring, knowing and caring for the natural and human communities within a region defined by nature. As 'bioregion" literally means territory of life, the goal is to learn about and connect with a place based on all its life-forms. This is achieved by appreciating the ecology, history, culture and cycles of the seasons where we live. Named after a tree and an animal in our bioregion, OAK & ORCA BIOREGIONAL SCHOOL encourages children to be strong, self-directed learners with an interest in sustainable communities.

Oak and Orca Bioregional Fair
Oak and Orca Bioregional Fair
Sun May 27, 2012
2738 Higgins Street (near Cook and Hillside) Victoria, BC

Come to the Oak and Orca Bioregional Fair!!!

Oak and Orca Bioregional School is hosting its 10th annual Bioregional Fair, SUNDAY MAY 27, 2012 11AM-3PM. This is a community event-there is something for everyone.

The fair will offer a variety of children's crafts and activities, free workshops and demonstrations to inspire, educate and connect people in the community; a silent auction featuring local and eco-friendly items; healthy lunch and bake sale; used book sale and more.

Named after a tree and an animal in our bioregion, OAK AND ORCA BIOREGIONAL SCHOOL encourages children to be strong, self-directed learners with an interest in sustainable communities.

SustainaBUILD Ottawa
Ottawa has the highest per capita square footage of office space of any market in Canada. The city also has a housing sector with an above average amount of multi-unit residential properties.
With most new developments targeted to achieve top levels of LEED certification, higher building performance, greater energy efficiency, and many other features of green properties, what does the future hold for the older stock?
Renewing older buildings can provide many financial and environmental benefits that conventional buildings do not. These attributes include energy and water savings, reduced waste, improved indoor environmental quality, greater employee comfort and productivity, and lower operations and maintenance costs.
Mounting evidence supports the contention that greener buildings can command relatively higher rents and asset value, enhance occupant health and well-being, improve employee productivity, attract tenants more quickly, reduce tenant turnover, and cost less to operate and maintain.

Transport Futures: Goods Movement & Mobility Pricing Forum
It is a huge understatement to say that the goods movement sector is vital to Ontario's economy. Without trucks, trains, ships, planes, vans, cars, bikes and foot messengers, we wouldn't have the products and services we need to survive and prosper. But inadequate transport infrastructure, increasing traffic congestion, fuel costs and hours on the road threaten the sector's profitability, the province's investment opportunities and, ultimately, our quality of life.
This packed day of learning and interactive discussion is divided into three distinct sessions so you can focus on each mobility pricing measure separately. You will have plenty of time for Q&A and to network with our speakers and other delegates. Proceedings will be captured and added to a Transport Futures communications tool kit to be released in 2013.

Canadian Association for Supported Employment Conference
Winnipeg will be host to the annual national CASE (Canadian Association for Supported Employment) conference this coming June. It is expected that over 250 delegates will attend the conference at the Delta Winnipeg Hotel to discuss strategies and successes of supporting persons with disabilities to work. The conference will bring together service providers, advocates and educators to share tools, resources and innovative practices in supported employment. CASE is a national network of service providers and citizens who are concerned about the full participation of persons with disabilities in the Canadian labour force.
Supported Employment is a term used to describe supports provided to individuals with disabilities to acquire employment in integrated settings. The concept of supported employment has made it possible for individuals with moderate-to-severe levels of disabilities to become active, wage-earning members of the workforce.
Across Canada, people with disabilities experience high rates of unemployment and poverty. Organizers hope to engage local businesses and service providers in this opportunity to learn about supported employment and explore the benefits of inclusion and diversity in the workforce.
The conference is being organized by the Manitoba Supported Employment Network, which is a non-profit organization committed to promoting and strengthening supported employment activities.

Security Certificate Detainee Mahjoub Rallies with Supporters Marking Exactly 12 Years of Detention without Charge
What: Press Briefing & Public Demonstration: Justice not Fear - March with Mahjoub
Where: CSIS Offices, 277 Front St. W., Toronto. March to Department of Justice and Federal Court House
Who: Mohammad Mahjoub, speakers from Amnesty International, the Justice for Mahjoub Network and supporters
Visuals: Giant, intricate display of the “case” against Mr Mahjoub;elaborately adorned mock judges; vibrant banners and placards
On June 26, 2000, Mohammad Mahjoub was arrested in a Hollywood-style arrest outside his workplace. One of five Muslim men arrested under Canada's notorious security certificate legislation, he has spent the last twelve years in jail, much of it in solitary confinement or under house
arrest, yet he has never been charged.
Security certificates allow the government to indefinitely detain and deport people based on their profile. Courts have ruled that the presumption of innocence does not apply. The case against the detainees, assembled by Canada's spy agency CSIS, is secret; it is not disclosed to detainees or their lawyers.
On June 26th, Mr. Mahjoub and his supporters will gather to demand his immediate liberation and that of the other two men still held under security certificates. Supporters will demand justice, apology,
reparations and citizenship for all five and accountability for all officials responsible for injustices against these men.

Roundtable: Health workers for refugee healthcare
As of June 30, 2012, refugees in Canada who are in need of medical assistance, including children, the elderly, and pregnant women, will no longer be able to access critical health care services. Among the services to be cut for some or all refugees are: prenatal care for pregnant women; access to mental health care; coverage for necessary medications, including insulin. Unless their condition is deemed a threat to public health or safety, some refugee claimants will also be denied access to physicians - even if they are suffering from illnesses like cancer or cardiovascular diseases, even if they are having heart attacks.
These cuts to health care for refugees come at the same time as the passing of Bill C-31, the draconian Refugee Exclusion Act that, in supposed efforts to crack down on human smuggling, mandates the immediate certain detention of refugee claimants, including minors. Please join us as health workers explain what health services are being cut, what community and health care resources exist for people who have limited access to health care, what resources need to be created, and how we can ensure adequate and accessible health for all.

The Canadian Water Summit is for the first time moving west. The third annual event will be held in Calgary in June 2012 to explore the competing water needs of cities, agriculture and energy.
In October, Alberta Premier Alison Redford added an explicit water focus to the Ministry of the Environment’s portfolio when appointing Minister Diana McQueen, underscoring the importance of the resource. Rally for the Fishers and Farmers of Gaza, Palestine
Join us on September 30 to stand in solidarity with both the farmers and fishers of Palestine as they work to defend their land and sea from occupation and continue their harvest and their livelihoods. Many people in Gaza have always relied on the land and the sea for their livelihood. Generations of Palestinian fishers have worked the sea, and farmers harvested the land, to support their communities and their lives. Today, the fishers and farmers of Gaza are under attack. The Union of Agricultural Work Committees in Palestine has called for international action and solidarity to support fishers and farmers under siege.

Gaza, Palestine lies along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Gaza has been under Israeli occupation since 1967, and under a tight and brutal siege since 2006, denying people and goods access and movement from the small coastal strip, one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Over 70% of the people of Gaza are refugees who have lived in Gaza since the 1948 Nakba - the occupation and ethnic cleansing of most of Palestine.

Gaza's Fishers: Today, over 70,000 Palestinians in Gaza rely on the sea and the fishing industry for their income and their lives. However, the sea in Gaza and the fishers of Gaza are bearing the brunt of one of the most severe aspects of Israel's siege on Gaza. Israeli warships constantly patrol Gaza's shores and have unilaterally declared fishing prohibited outside 3 nautical miles. Tens of millions of dollars of income have been lost and fishers families forced into unemployment and poverty. Fishers who venture to the 3 nautical mile "border" are regularly shot at, their boats seized or damaged, and subject to arrest, detention and imprisonment. In 2012, there have already been hundreds of attacks on fishing boats by Israeli warships. (See video of Gaza fishers under attack: http://www.vancouver2gaza.org/2012/07/29/video-gazas-fishers-under-israeli-assault/)

Gaza's Farmers: Gaza's farmers are also subject to an ongoing war against their lives, livelihood and land. Israel has unilaterally declared the northern and eastern edges of the Gaza Strip to be "buffer zones" or "no go zones", often in some of the most agriculturally proficient areas of the often-dry region, on land farmed by Palestinian families for generations. Anyone who ventures into these areas regularly faces threats to their lives from soldiers, snipers, tanks, helicopters and drones that routinely patrol the area. The "buffer zone" includes 17% of Gaza's total land mass - but 35% of its agricultural land and 113,000 people. 305 water wells, 197 chicken farms, 377 sheep farms, and over 1000 homes have been destroyed by Israeli occupation military inside the "buffer zone." (See video of Gaza farmers and fishers resisting occupation:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RMAJi9OPiU)

While Palestinian fishers and farmers are braving gunfire to work their land and sea, the Canadian government of Stephen Harper has nothing but praise for the Israeli state that enforces this siege on Gaza. On March 29, 2006, Canada became the first country in the world to impose a siege on the Palestinian people living in Gaza and the West Bank, declaring cancellation of aid to Palestine. Foreign Minister John Baird recently described Canada as "Israel's best friend."

Of course, Israel is not alone in denying indigenous people the right to fish and farm their land - like Israel, Canada was founded upon the theft of indigenous people's land, a settler colonial reality of genocide and oppression that continues to the present day. Indigenous nations are engaged in constant struggles to defend their fishing rights against attempts to deny their right to fish their own waters commercially, as well as to defend their traditional territories from pipelines and resource extraction.

Join us on September 30 to demand an end to the siege on Gaza's fishers and farmers, and to demand that the Canadian government end its extensive political, diplomatic and legal support for Israeli apartheid and occupation - and to show the farmers and fishers of Gaza that their struggle echoes around the world.

Initial endorsers include: Boycott Israeli Apartheid Campaign, Independent Jewish Voices, Gaza's Ark, Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights - UBC, Union of Agricultural Work Committees (Palestine)

Spreading the Maple Spring: Lessons from Quebec's Student Strike
Spreading the Maple Spring: Lessons from Quebec's Student Strike
Part of a Cross-Canada Speaking Tour
-Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, former spokesperson for CLASSE
-Cloé Zawadzki-Turcotte, a former member of CLASSE's executive and a key organizer behind the strike
-Ethan Cox, rabble.ca's Quebec correspondent and a former student organizer
-Plus other special guests, to be announced...
Fighting for Education and Against Austerity Together
The forum will address what happened in Quebec, but also how the hard-earned lessons of the longest student strike in Canadian history can be applied to organizing across the country. We hope to be able to build bridges of solidarity with movements in other parts of Canada, ties that are critical to mounting a truly national movement against Stephen Harper and austerity.
For CLASSE, the largest of the student unions involved in the Quebec student strike, this victory is merely the start of the next fight. And that fight is against austerity, in all its forms. More importantly, that fight is to not only oppose assaults on our social welfare, but to build a better society.

Is that an archive in your basement, or are you just hoarding?
Ulli Diemer of Connexions –discusses problems facing grassroots archives.

Preservation as subversion?
Our society has little interest in the past or the future: it lives in the here-and-now: a constant whirl of unchanging change. The future -– grim and hot –- is best ignored. The past, except when packaged into marketable heritage attractions, is of scant interest.
Yet the past is part of the present. Choices made in the past brought us where we are today, and push us in particular directions. Knowing those choices were the outcome of often-fierce conflicts between competing interests and alternative visions helps remind us that the future too is being shaped by similar conflicts and choices.
Historical memory is potentially subversive because it tells us that no form of society is permanent, and no economic system is inevitable. By reminding us that there are alternatives, it reminds us that we can choose our future.
One way people actively resist the ideology of inevitability is by preserving memories and histories of past struggles. Some groups and individuals have done this is by collecting grassroots archives –- more or less informal collections of documents and materials produced by citizen activists in the course of trying to shape a future based on justice, cooperation, and freedom.
These grassroots archives face problems of surviving, and finding ways sharing the accumulated history in their collections. Questions of where and how to survive confront them,

91st Annual ACP/CMA National College Media Convention
The National College Media Convention is the largest gathering of college journalists and advisers in the world. Associated Collegiate Press and College Media Advisers partner to prepare nearly 400 practical and professional learning sessions, from high-profile keynotes to specific, problem-solving breakouts, hands-on workshops and discussion groups. College Broadcasters, Inc., arranges a slate of broadcast-oriented speakers. Other convention activities include an exhibit hall with vendors who sell to student media, ACP’s Best of Show contest, receptions, awards convocations, critiques and a newspaper job fair.

Breakout sessions for newspapers, online outlets, broadcast stations, yearbooks and magazines are planned to meet the publishing and broadcasting needs of all college and university student media. Some are specifically for college dailies, some for journalists at community colleges and private schools. Others are for those looking for the latest information from the FCC affecting their campus radio station or how to use the latest software. Whether it’s ethics and law, technology and design, advertising and business operations, photography and art or just the basics of news writing and reporting, this convention covers all the bases.

Book Launch: Raising the Workers' Flag
During the Great Depression, the conflicting interests of capital and labour became clearer than ever before. Radical Canadian workers, encouraged by the Red International of Labour Unions, responded by building the Workers' Unity League -- an organization that greatly advanced the cause of unions in Canada, and boasted 40,000 members at its height. In Raising the Workers' Flag, the first full-length study of this robust group, Stephen L. Endicott brings its passionate efforts to light in memorable detail.

Raising the Workers' Flag is based on newly available or previously untapped sources, including documents from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's Security Service and the Communist Party's archives. Using these impressive finds, Endicott gives an intimate sense of the raging debates of the labour movement of the 1930s. A gripping account of the League's dreams and daring, Raising the Workers' Flag enlivens some of the most dramatic struggles of Canadian labour history.

Public Lecture: The Rise and Fall of the Welfare State
The Rise and Fall of the Welfare State
In an age of government imposed austerity, and after 30 years of neoliberal restructuring, the future of the welfare state looks increasingly uncertain. Asbjørn Wahl offers an accessible analysis of the situation across Europe, identifies the most important challenges and presents practical proposals for combating the assault on welfare.
Wahl argues that the welfare state should be seen as the result of a class compromise forged in the 20th century, which means that it cannot easily be exported internationally. He considers the enormous shifts in power relations and the profound internal changes to the welfare state which have occurred during the neoliberal era, pointing to the paradigm shift that the welfare state is going through. This is illustrated by the shift from welfare to workfare and increased top-down control.
Asbjørn Wahl is an adviser to the Norwegian Union of Municipal and General Employees and director of the Campaign for the Welfare State in Norway. He serves as Vice President of the Road Transport Workers' Section of the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) and Chair of the ITF Working Group on Climate Change. He is also a member of the coordinating committee of the European Social Forum. He has published a number of articles on politics, social and labor both in Norway and internationally. His most recent publication is The Rise and Fall of the Welfare State (Pluto Press, London, November 2011).

Book Launch: The Rise and Fall of the Welfare State
Whither welfare? In an age of government-imposed austerity, and after 30 years of neo-liberal restructuring, the future of the welfare state looks increasingly uncertain. The Rise and Fall of the Welfare State points to an alternative way forward for the trade union movement based on concrete examples of struggles and alliance-building.

The book offers an accessible analysis of the situation across Europe, identifies the most important challenges and presents practical proposals for combating the paradigm shift that the welfare state is going through. This is illustrated by the shift from welfare to workfare and increased top-down control.

About the author: Asbjørn Wahl is director of the Campaign for the Welfare State. He is also an adviser at the Norwegian Union of Municipal and General Employees and holds an elected position at the International Transport Workers' Federation. He is an active member of the Labour and Globalisation network.

"Wahl demonstrates how power in society has shifted and why it has let to growing inequalities. A must read for debaters and policy makers who seek inspiration." (Peter Waldorff, General Secretary of Public Services International)

The Art of Politics and the Personal: Looking at the Paintings of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera
We are immersed in a global culture that responds to the same imperatives as all other aspects of the neo-liberal economy. Cultural production is for profit, measured in sheer numbers: the size of the audience; attendance, circulation and sales figures; YouTube hits and demographics; and, of course, price, as measured by the speculation on numerous markets and institutions that deal in rare and unique commodities. Walter Benjamin famously wrote about mass reproduction and art, arguing that as images became more ubiquitous, the "aura" of originals would decline, liberating vision to become useful to the direct cultural producers once again. Revolutionaries and socialists often look at art this way; we yearn for an authentic, political art that can resist and even stand outside such a monstrous, mimetic, commodity culture.

The Mexican artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo are often called on to fill that need. Modern painters from the early 20th Century, they explored the new forms and imagery possible in painting, working in styles from surrealism to socialist realism, creating small autobiographical works for themselves and giant murals done for the wealthiest patrons in the world. Their work is rich, warm, and rewarding to look at, but it also suggests many contradictions and questions. This talk will look at some of the methods by which art is discussed from a Marxist perspective.

Author talk: Jamie Swift on "Warrior Nation: Rebranding Canada in an Age of Anxiety"
Warrior Nation: Rebranding Canada in an Age of Anxiety by Ian McKay and Jamie Swift provides a critical perspective on both Canada's growing effort to portray itself as a militaristic Warrior Nation and its exploitation of history in achieving this end.

Taking examples from the Boer War, the First and Second World Wars, and Canada's UN peacekeeping missions in Africa, Ian McKay and Jamie Swift consider how Canada's valorization of military history has thrown totemic Canadian ideals of peace, tolerance, and reasoned public debate into question. Replacing these ideals, the authors assert, is a shift in Canadian political culture toward authoritarian leadership and permanent political polarization.

Dialogue and Debate on the Role of Canadian Development NGOs
Few institutions embody the image of Canada's international benevolence like non-governmental organizations devoted to development abroad. But do the actions of Canadian NGOs match this perception?

On November 21, Nikolas Barry-Shaw, co-author of Paved with Good Intentions: Canada's development NGOs from idealism to imperialism will participate on a panel with University of Ottawa Professor Nipa Banerjee, who has served as a practitioner and policy analyst in international development and foreign aid for over 30 years, including heading Canada's aid program in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and in Afghanistan
They will consider the question "Is there a future for Canadian development NGOs? Should there be?"
Rita Morbia, Executive Director of Inter Pares, will moderate.

Join us to listen, reflect, and discuss the role of Canadian development NGOs.

Is that an archive in your basement... or are you just hoarding?
CONNEXIONS invites you to an open house and networking event for amateur archivists, keepers of the radical past, and friends and supporters of grassroots archives, independent libraries, and people's history. Bring your stories, ideas, and examples of grassroots and radical history.

Are you an 'accidental archivist'? Have you been saving the publications and documents produced by the social justice projects you've been involved in? Have those materials you collected grown into a daunting accumulation of stuff in your basement, garage, or storage locker? Are you looking for a solution?

If so, you aren't alone. The CONNEXIONS ARCHIVE - 100,000+ social-justice documents and growing - is on the hunt for a secure home. It turns out a surprising number of other people, projects, and small archives are wrestling with similar problems: trying to figure out how to preserve informal archives found in basements and back offices and, just as important, to make them accessible.

Connexions hopes to initiate a discussion and perhaps a working group about the 'archive problem.' "Maybe we can work together to find solutions," says Connexions Co-ordinator Ulli Diemer. "Can we figure out a way to network of sustainable local grassroots archive projects which collaborate on preserving and digitizing materials?"
Remembering is another way of continuing the Long Revolution: the struggle for justice. Come and share materials you've saved, memories, and ideas for ensuring a future for the past.

Preservation as Subversion
Do grassroots archives have a future?

Grassroots archives play a valuable role in what has been called "the battle of memory".

Mainstream media and institutions of power consign inconvenient histories, struggles, and alternative visions to what George Orwell called "the memory hole."

People's history projects such as grassroots archives preserve and share stories of resistance, hidden histories, and alternative visions. Toronto's CONNEXIONS ARCHIVE, founded in 1975, is one such grassroots archiving project - now on the hunt for a secure home. There are a surprising number of other small projects and amateur archivists also devoted to preserving and digitizing publications and documents created by grassroots social justice groups. Many of them are wrestling with similar problems: trying to figure out how to preserve informal archives found in basements and back offices and, just as important, to make them accessible. They all share a belief that remembering is another way of waging the continuing struggle for justice.

How can we preserve the history of our movements? Where can we preserve them?
Can we work together to digitize and share. Can we 'Archive locally, share globally'?
Join us at Beit Zatoun for a talk and discussion with Ulli Diemer of Connexions and other guests.

Preservation as Subversion: Do grassroots archives have a future?
CONNEXIONS and Beit Zatoun are sponsoring a discussion on the future of grassroots archives.

Grassroots archives play an important role in what some call “the battle of memory”. They preserve and share books, documents, periodicals, and other materials bearing hidden histories and alternative visions. Their role is particularly vital in a time when mainstream ‘memory institutions’ like official archives and libraries are restricting acquisitions, limiting access, and discarding materials as funding is slashed.

CONNEXIONS, a project founded in 1975, known for its extensive online library of social justice documents at www.connexions.org, also maintains the CONNEXIONS ARCHIVE, a collection of books, periodicals, documents, and other materials from grassroots activist groups, materials gradually being digitized. The CONNEXIONS ARCHIVE is working to secure a permanent home, including space for the team of volunteers and interns who work on cataloguing and digitizing.

The problem of space is one that faces other “basement archives” and “backroom archives” collected by projects and individuals who have assumed responsibility for preserving the history of grassroots groups and movements. They face similar problems of surviving, and sharing the accumulated history in their collections.

CONNEXIONS is inviting people interested in the future of grassroots archive to participate in a discussion and brainstorming session with Ulli Diemer and other keepers of the radical past.

Ontario Common Front General Assembly
You are invited to the Ontario Common Front (OCF) General Assembly.
We are facing an increasing crisis in Ontario and the rest of Canada. Almost every day journalists report that the gap between the rich and the rest of us, threatens our way of life. Between 1981-2012 Ontario has witnessed the largest increase in income inequality of any province.
However, there are many opportunities to win progressive change. With a Liberal leadership convention in late January and a provincial election expected in the spring, the time is right for us to develop strategies and tactics that support public revenue generation and its fair and equitable distribution.
The OCF model of community-labour organizing is breaking down divisions between unions and community. OCF is a mix of over 90 community and labour organizations working together to combat growing inequality in Ontario; while providing alternatives.
At this General Assembly, labour and community groups will come together to discuss a number of pressing issues that are threatening the very fabric of our society. For example, there will be a strategy workshop on Bill 115 and similar legislation aimed at the broader public sector. This workshop, like all others, will be facilitated by both labour and community activists and will include educational and strategic components. These workshops provide an opportunity for discussion and organizing around an array of important issues in our collective struggle against inequality.

Sleep-Out at Glen Murray's Office
Stop the Cut to Community Start-Up

When: Thursday, December 13th: 6pm: Meal and Rally; 7pm – 8am: SLEEP OUT
Where: 514 Parliament St (at Winchester)

* Bring your sleeping bags and mats
* Prepare to sleep-out all night or come stop-by for as long as you can
* Breakfast and Coffee the next morning at 8am

The Provincial Liberal Government is set to cut the Community Start-Up and Maintenance Benefit (CSUMB) January 1st, 2013. The CSUMB is a housing benefit for people on social assistance (OW and ODSP). For thousands of people across the Province every month, it is literally the difference between being homeless on the streets or being able to get a place to live. The cut to this benefit will mean that many more people will be made homeless and a time in Toronto when so many shelter beds have been lost and the shelter system itself is in crisis. We must STOP THIS CUT!

Glen Murray is MPP for Toronto Centre which includes the 'Downtown East', one of the poorest neighborhoods in all of Canada with a high concentration of homelessness. Welfare and disability rates are already impossible to survive on as this government cuts away at more and more benefits and the rates of income keep falling. Today welfare rates are almost 60% below where they should be, meaning a measly $606/month for a single person. Murray is campaigning to take over running the Province from McGuinty. We challenge Murray that this is the despicable legacy he is a part of and we demand he take action to stop the cut to Community Start-Up.

Winter cold is about to set-in and a growing number of people on the streets will be put at risk – sleeping in the cold will have devastating effects on people's health; too many homeless have frozen to death on these streets already. Emergency action is required. As this government prepares to cut a housing benefit that will make more people homeless, we will sleep in their doorways, camp-out in their hallways, create shelters out of their constituency offices. People have the right to housing, health and safety.

Join OCAP December 13th to SLEEP-OUT at Murray's office.
STOP THE CUT TO COMMUNITY START-UP, RAISE the RATES, BUILD HOUSING NOW!

On December 10th, Indigenous people and allies stood in solidarity across Canada to assert Indigenous sovereignty and begin the work towards sustainable, renewable development. All people will be affected by the continued damage to the land and water and we welcome Indigenous and non-Indigenous allies to join in creating healthy sustainable communities. We encourage youth to become engaged in this movement as you are the leaders of our future. There have always been individuals and groups who have been working towards these goals. Idle No More seeks to create solidarity and further support these goals.

Doctors of the Dark Side
Join us for the Toronto premiere screening of DOCTORS OF THE DARK SIDE, the untold story of the physicians and psychologists who have worked with the US government to torture victims in the so-called "war on terror." This screening is co-presented by the Justice for Majhoub Network, the Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture and Amnesty International Canada, and will feature special guest speakers.

DOCTORS OF THE DARK SIDE
Exposes the role psychologists and physicians play in designing, facilitating & covering up torture by the US military in the "war on terror."
SYNOPSIS: Doctors of the Dark Side exposes the scandal behind the torture scandal — how psychologists and physicians implemented and covered up the torture of detainees in US controlled military prisons. The stories of four detainees and the doctors involved in their abuse show how essential doctors have been to the torture program. Director Martha Davis (Interrogation Psychologists) spent four years investigating the controversy and produced the documentary with an award-winning team that includes Oscar-winners Mark Jonathan Harris (Writer) and Mercedes Ruehl (Narrator), and Emmy-winner Lisa Rinzler (Director of Photography). Editor M. Trevino (Hidden Battles) led the post-production team of the feature length documentary.

Book launch: Archive of the Undressed
Launching Archive of the Undressed (Wolsak and Wynn Publishers Ltd.), with Special Guests from the MFA in Writing.
From twirling tassels to dead playmates Archive of the Undressed is a sharp, darkly comic look at the image of women in a society between changing sexual mores. Jeanette Lynes brings her iconic style to these poems, fearlessly critiquing attitudes towards women, poking at Canadian identity and finding something sexy in the settlement of “The Queen’s Bush” – Northern Ontario. A wickedly pointed and funny collection, Archive of the Undressed will overturn any reader’s belief that poetry is boring.

Film premiere: Haiti, where did the money go?
People in Canada and the US donated more than $1.6 billion after the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Filmmaker Michele Mitchell went to Haiti to find the answer—and what she found was the big business of emergency aid. Some say that what is happening is nothing more than disaster profiteering. Others say relief organizations are doing the best they can under very difficult circumstances.
Yet Haitians remain in squalid camps. Few have access to drinking water, sanitation is inadequate, and cholera is an ongoing threat. With at least 10,000 known aid groups operating in Haiti—the most per capita in the world—have conditions improved?
"Haiti: Where Did The Money Go?" takes viewers from crowded homeless camps to the boardrooms of relief organizations, talking to survivors, anthropologists, and aid experts to explore how disaster aid really works.

An evening with Miko Peled
Born in Jerusalem in 1961, Miko Peled grew up in a well known Zionist family. His father, Matti Peled, was a young officer in the war of 1948, and a general in the war of 1967. His grandfather, Dr. Avraham Katsnelson, was a signer of the Israeli Declaration of Independence.
Coming from an elite family in Israel, he has undergone a transformation in his thinking through his increasingly close and warm relations with Palestinians. Of his recently published book, The General’s Son, Miko says: “It’s time to sweep away some of the myths, and to uncover the truth so that we can finally live in peace, together.”
He begins with the myth of 1948, a land without a people for people without a land:
“It turns out that the creation of Israel had not, after all, been a haphazard fight in which the Arabs fled their homes at the directive of their own leaders, but it had been an unprovoked, systematic campaign of ethnic cleansing by the Jewish militia involving massacres, terrorism and the wholesale looting of an entire nation.”
