Each year, CUP organizes a five-night national conference in January, affectionately referred to as NASH. Conferences give student journalists the opportunity to meet with their peers, share skills, and participate in workshops and seminars hosted by professionals in the field. The national conference is also the cooperative's annual general meeting, where members determine CUP's direction and elect national staff. Moving Beyond the Voluntary and Advancing Sustainability by Leveraging "Green" Responsibilities "Employee engagement" is a term sustainability professionals are familiar with -- a means of motivating others within their business or organization toward advancing "green" initiatives. There are the voluntary measures employees may take (e.g. powering down their computers, recycling waste paper, choosing to print 2-sided, etc.) but these can be piecemeal and difficult to measure. To truly advance sustainability, and do it efficiently, one must target those employees in positions of greatest influence. Who are these key players? What are their departments? What role do they play in advancing sustainability? When do voluntary measures become "green" responsibilities? During this session of SPRiNG, Roya Khaleeli will begin by introducing this critical issue. Was Canadian "medicare" a great step forward in the provision of a fundamental social service - Canadaâ€™s biggest and best social program? Or did it become a bloated albatross, a bureaucratic approach to health care that created inefficiencies, rationing, and mediocrity? Was Tommy Douglas, father of the distinctive Canadian approach to health care, actually the greatest Canadian, or was he a deluded socialist? Moderator: J.L. Granatstein Speaking for the motion will be Michael Bliss, University Professor emeritus at the University of Toronto who has long been one of Canadaâ€™s most prolific and prominent historians. Feb 7/2012 Owen Sound, ON	Commission for Quality Public Services and Tax Fairness The McGuinty government is planning painful cuts to health care, education, and social services (as high as 33 percent in some Ministries ). From the smallest women's shelter to the largest hospital, no public service is safe. Under these mounting attacks, the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) approached a national advocacy group called the Public Services Foundation of Canada (PSFC) to hold a Commission on Quality Public Services and Tax Fairness. Last September, the PSFC agreed to work with OPSEU to hold province-wide hearings to hear from people who value public services and tax fairness as a way to pay for preserving those services our communities rely on. Feb 25/2012 Vancouver, BC	Rally: "Battle for the future of Mount Pleasant" RAMP has documented many irregularities and problems in the process leading up to the February 27 rezoning hearing for the proposed RIZE tower development by Rize Alliance Properties Ltd. It sacrifices Mount Pleasant's "heritage heart" for a projected $27 million profit , making the project a lucrative deal for the developer, but an unfair deal for the community. After millions of public dollars and thousands of staff and volunteer hours of spent to develop the Mount Pleasant Community Plan, t he architect, developer, and planner have used a biased interpretation of the plan to justify greater height and density . They have disregard ed strong community opposition, used incorrect and misleading images in a staff reports to City Council , published incorrect information on the City website, and presented a flawed final report to Council. Yet on the basis of that report , Council still voted 8-2 in favor of referring the proposal to a public hearing for final approval. It has not escaped notice that Council referred to hearing this controversial project fostered under the City's recently-fired Director of Planning (Brent Toderian ) on the very day the City fired him. The upcoming rally and public hearing will be opportunities for media and the public to learn more about the serious problems with the planning and consultation processes in Vancouver today, and perhaps learn what must be fixed. March 21, the International Day for the Elimination of Racism, marks the anniversary of the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre in South Africa when police opened fire on hundreds of South Africans protesting against Apartheid's passbook laws, killing 67 and wounding 186. Collectively, we join friends and allies around the world to mark this day. By speaking the truth about racism in Canada, we aim to wake up others to the need for a new anti-racist consciousness. We know of the historic injustices this country was founded on, including the forced confinement of Indigenous children in residential schools and Japanese children in internment camps. In our daily lives, racist stereotyping, profiling, silencing, marginalization, scapegoating and dehumanization permeates the media, education system, policing institutions, workplaces, and our relationships. The Ontario government is preparing to table a slash-and-burn budget in late March or early April that will be guided by the hundreds of cuts that former TD Bank Economist Don Drummond is expected to propose later this month. Take these extra steps to help make the Day of Action against cuts a success: * Pass an emergency motion at your meeting to support the April 21 Day of Action; * Appoint a staff member too coordinate the mobilization of your union, labour council or organization; * Outreach to community allies, in particular any local Occupy Activists, to connect our issues in fight for equity and social justice; * Bring your own signs, banners and union flags to show support; and * Secure funding from your union, labour council or organization for buses from your community. Among the services to be cut for some or all refugees are: prenatal care for pregnant women; access to mental health care; coverage for necessary medications, including insulin. Unless their condition is deemed a threat to public health or safety, some refugee claimants will also be denied access to physicians - even if they are suffering from illnesses like cancer or cardiovascular diseases, even if they are having heart attacks. These cuts to health care for refugees come at the same time as the passing of Bill C-31, the draconian Refugee Exclusion Act that, in supposed efforts to crack down on human smuggling, mandates the immediate certain detention of refugee claimants, including minors. Sep 30/2012 Vancouver, BC	Rally for the Fishers and Farmers of Gaza, Palestine Join us on September 30 to stand in solidarity with both the farmers and fishers of Palestine as they work to defend their land and sea from occupation and continue their harvest and their livelihoods. Many people in Gaza have always relied on the land and the sea for their livelihood. Generations of Palestinian fishers have worked the sea, and farmers harvested the land, to support their communities and their lives. Today, the fishers and farmers of Gaza are under attack. The Union of Agricultural Work Committees in Palestine has called for international action and solidarity to support fishers and farmers under siege. Gaza, Palestine lies along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Gaza has been under Israeli occupation since 1967, and under a tight and brutal siege since 2006, denying people and goods access and movement from the small coastal strip, one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Over 70% of the people of Gaza are refugees who have lived in Gaza since the 1948 Nakba - the occupation and ethnic cleansing of most of Palestine. Gaza's Fishers: Today, over 70,000 Palestinians in Gaza rely on the sea and the fishing industry for their income and their lives. However, the sea in Gaza and the fishers of Gaza are bearing the brunt of one of the most severe aspects of Israel's siege on Gaza. Israeli warships constantly patrol Gaza's shores and have unilaterally declared fishing prohibited outside 3 nautical miles. Tens of millions of dollars of income have been lost and fishers families forced into unemployment and poverty. Fishers who venture to the 3 nautical mile "border" are regularly shot at, their boats seized or damaged, and subject to arrest, detention and imprisonment. In 2012, there have already been hundreds of attacks on fishing boats by Israeli warships. (See video of Gaza fishers under attack: http://www.vancouver2gaza.org/2012/07/29/video-gazas-fishers-under-israeli-assault/) Gaza's Farmers: Gaza's farmers are also subject to an ongoing war against their lives, livelihood and land. Israel has unilaterally declared the northern and eastern edges of the Gaza Strip to be "buffer zones" or "no go zones", often in some of the most agriculturally proficient areas of the often-dry region, on land farmed by Palestinian families for generations. Anyone who ventures into these areas regularly faces threats to their lives from soldiers, snipers, tanks, helicopters and drones that routinely patrol the area. The "buffer zone" includes 17% of Gaza's total land mass - but 35% of its agricultural land and 113,000 people. 305 water wells, 197 chicken farms, 377 sheep farms, and over 1000 homes have been destroyed by Israeli occupation military inside the "buffer zone." (See video of Gaza farmers and fishers resisting occupation:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RMAJi9OPiU) While Palestinian fishers and farmers are braving gunfire to work their land and sea, the Canadian government of Stephen Harper has nothing but praise for the Israeli state that enforces this siege on Gaza. On March 29, 2006, Canada became the first country in the world to impose a siege on the Palestinian people living in Gaza and the West Bank, declaring cancellation of aid to Palestine. Foreign Minister John Baird recently described Canada as "Israel's best friend." Of course, Israel is not alone in denying indigenous people the right to fish and farm their land - like Israel, Canada was founded upon the theft of indigenous people's land, a settler colonial reality of genocide and oppression that continues to the present day. Indigenous nations are engaged in constant struggles to defend their fishing rights against attempts to deny their right to fish their own waters commercially, as well as to defend their traditional territories from pipelines and resource extraction. Join us on September 30 to demand an end to the siege on Gaza's fishers and farmers, and to demand that the Canadian government end its extensive political, diplomatic and legal support for Israeli apartheid and occupation - and to show the farmers and fishers of Gaza that their struggle echoes around the world. Oct 13/2012 Toronto, ON	Is that an archive in your basement, or are you just hoarding? Ulli Diemer of Connexions Â–discusses problems facing grassroots archives. Preservation as subversion? Our society has little interest in the past or the future: it lives in the here-and-now: a constant whirl of unchanging change. The future -Â– grim and hot Â–- is best ignored. The past, except when packaged into marketable heritage attractions, is of scant interest. Yet the past is part of the present. Choices made in the past brought us where we are today, and push us in particular directions. Knowing those choices were the outcome of often-fierce conflicts between competing interests and alternative visions helps remind us that the future too is being shaped by similar conflicts and choices. Historical memory is potentially subversive because it tells us that no form of society is permanent, and no economic system is inevitable. By reminding us that there are alternatives, it reminds us that we can choose our future. One way people actively resist the ideology of inevitability is by preserving memories and histories of past struggles. Some groups and individuals have done this is by collecting grassroots archives Â–- more or less informal collections of documents and materials produced by citizen activists in the course of trying to shape a future based on justice, cooperation, and freedom. Nov 15/2012 Toronto, ON	Public Lecture: The Rise and Fall of the Welfare State The Rise and Fall of the Welfare State In an age of government imposed austerity, and after 30 years of neoliberal restructuring, the future of the welfare state looks increasingly uncertain. AsbjÃ¸rn Wahl offers an accessible analysis of the situation across Europe, identifies the most important challenges and presents practical proposals for combating the assault on welfare. Wahl argues that the welfare state should be seen as the result of a class compromise forged in the 20th century, which means that it cannot easily be exported internationally. He considers the enormous shifts in power relations and the profound internal changes to the welfare state which have occurred during the neoliberal era, pointing to the paradigm shift that the welfare state is going through. This is illustrated by the shift from welfare to workfare and increased top-down control. AsbjÃ¸rn Wahl is an adviser to the Norwegian Union of Municipal and General Employees and director of the Campaign for the Welfare State in Norway. He serves as Vice President of the Road Transport Workers' Section of the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) and Chair of the ITF Working Group on Climate Change. He is also a member of the coordinating committee of the European Social Forum. He has published a number of articles on politics, social and labor both in Norway and internationally. Nov 18/2012 Toronto, ON	The Art of Politics and the Personal: Looking at the Paintings of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera We are immersed in a global culture that responds to the same imperatives as all other aspects of the neo-liberal economy. Cultural production is for profit, measured in sheer numbers: the size of the audience; attendance, circulation and sales figures; YouTube hits and demographics; and, of course, price, as measured by the speculation on numerous markets and institutions that deal in rare and unique commodities. Walter Benjamin famously wrote about mass reproduction and art, arguing that as images became more ubiquitous, the "aura" of originals would decline, liberating vision to become useful to the direct cultural producers once again. Revolutionaries and socialists often look at art this way; we yearn for an authentic, political art that can resist and even stand outside such a monstrous, mimetic, commodity culture. The Mexican artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo are often called on to fill that need. Modern painters from the early 20th Century, they explored the new forms and imagery possible in painting, working in styles from surrealism to socialist realism, creating small autobiographical works for themselves and giant murals done for the wealthiest patrons in the world. Their work is rich, warm, and rewarding to look at, but it also suggests many contradictions and questions. This talk will look at some of the methods by which art is discussed from a Marxist perspective. Mainstream media and institutions of power consign inconvenient histories, struggles, and alternative visions to what George Orwell called "the memory hole." People's history projects such as grassroots archives preserve and share stories of resistance, hidden histories, and alternative visions. Toronto's CONNEXIONS ARCHIVE, founded in 1975, is one such grassroots archiving project - now on the hunt for a secure home. There are a surprising number of other small projects and amateur archivists also devoted to preserving and digitizing publications and documents created by grassroots social justice groups. Many of them are wrestling with similar problems: trying to figure out how to preserve informal archives found in basements and back offices and, just as important, to make them accessible. Grassroots archives play an important role in what some call â€œthe battle of memoryâ€. They preserve and share books, documents, periodicals, and other materials bearing hidden histories and alternative visions. Nov 29/2012 Ottawa, ON	Trolley Cars and Steam Whistles in the Park The Workers History Museum presents Trolley Cars and Steam Whistles in the Park. An evening of music and storytelling. STORIES On a snowy December night in 1942, the town of Almonte, Ontario's Christmas celebrations were cut short when a train transporting Canadian troops rear-ended an Ottawa-bound passenger train that was waiting at the station platform. The collision killed 36 people and injured more than 200. It is considered one of the worst train wrecks in Canadian history. The Ottawa Storytellers will present a live re-telling of this tragic event. LIVE MUSIC The evening will also feature live folk music by Chris White who will perform his original songs, one written for this event about the impact of Britannia Park on the local community and Mac Beattie's song about the Almonte Train Wreck. Almost every day journalists report that the gap between the rich and the rest of us, threatens our way of life. Between 1981-2012 Ontario has witnessed the largest increase in income inequality of any province. However, there are many opportunities to win progressive change. With a Liberal leadership convention in late January and a provincial election expected in the spring, the time is right for us to develop strategies and tactics that support public revenue generation and its fair and equitable distribution. The OCF model of community-labour organizing is breaking down divisions between unions and community. OCF is a mix of over 90 community and labour organizations working together to combat growing inequality in Ontario; while providing alternatives. At this General Assembly, labour and community groups will come together to discuss a number of pressing issues that are threatening the very fabric of our society. Dec 13/2012 Toronto, ON	Sleep-Out at Glen Murray's Office Stop the Cut to Community Start-Up When: Thursday, December 13th: 6pm: Meal and Rally; 7pm â€“ 8am: SLEEP OUT Where: 514 Parliament St (at Winchester) * Bring your sleeping bags and mats * Prepare to sleep-out all night or come stop-by for as long as you can * Breakfast and Coffee the next morning at 8am The Provincial Liberal Government is set to cut the Community Start-Up and Maintenance Benefit (CSUMB) January 1st, 2013. The CSUMB is a housing benefit for people on social assistance (OW and ODSP). For thousands of people across the Province every month, it is literally the difference between being homeless on the streets or being able to get a place to live. The cut to this benefit will mean that many more people will be made homeless and a time in Toronto when so many shelter beds have been lost and the shelter system itself is in crisis. We must STOP THIS CUT! Glen Murray is MPP for Toronto Centre which includes the 'Downtown East', one of the poorest neighborhoods in all of Canada with a high concentration of homelessness. Welfare and disability rates are already impossible to survive on as this government cuts away at more and more benefits and the rates of income keep falling. Today welfare rates are almost 60% below where they should be, meaning a measly $606/month for a single person. Murray is campaigning to take over running the Province from McGuinty. We challenge Murray that this is the despicable legacy he is a part of and we demand he take action to stop the cut to Community Start-Up. Winter cold is about to set-in and a growing number of people on the streets will be put at risk â€“ sleeping in the cold will have devastating effects on people's health; too many homeless have frozen to death on these streets already. Emergency action is required. As this government prepares to cut a housing benefit that will make more people homeless, we will sleep in their doorways, camp-out in their hallways, create shelters out of their constituency offices. Dec 21/2012 Ottawa, ON	Idle No More: Mission and Plan of Action Idle No More calls on all people to join in a revolution which honors and fulfills Indigenous sovereignty which protects the land and water. Colonization continues through attacks to Indigenous rights and damage to the land and water. We must repair these violations, live the spirit and intent of the treaty relationship, work towards justice in action, and protect Mother Earth. On December 10th, Indigenous people and allies stood in solidarity across Canada to assert Indigenous sovereignty and begin the work towards sustainable, renewable development. All people will be affected by the continued damage to the land and water and we welcome Indigenous and non-Indigenous allies to join in creating healthy sustainable communities. We encourage youth to become engaged in this movement as you are the leaders of our future. There have always been individuals and groups who have been working towards these goals. The Mayor of Sarnia and city police have asked for a meeting to present an offer to the end of the blockade. Band members are indicating they will continue the blockade until Chief Teresa Spence is granted a meeting with Prime Minister Harper and there is recognition of the historical injustice inflicted upon the community. The meeting will take place at 11 am, on the blockade. The stories of four detainees and the doctors involved in their abuse show how essential doctors have been to the torture program. Feb 7/2013 to Feb 7/2012 Vancouver, BC	An evening with Miko Peled Born in Jerusalem in 1961, Miko Peled grew up in a well known Zionist family. His father, Matti Peled, was a young officer in the war of 1948, and a general in the war of 1967. His grandfather, Dr. Avraham Katsnelson, was a signer of the Israeli Declaration of Independence. Coming from an elite family in Israel, he has undergone a transformation in his thinking through his increasingly close and warm relations with Palestinians.
