Little Regard for Poor Countries

Letter to the Editor, September 15, 2012

Re: Factory fires fill 314 in Pakistan

The story about the fires that killed 314 Pakistan workers was on page 20 of Thursday’s Star. The larger of these fires was in a garment factory, which killed 289. It has been named as one of the country’s worst industrial accidents and was undoubtedly due to horrific safety and working conditions.

Front-page articles that day included an article about Brampton restricting hanging laundry in the front yard. Page 20 was two pages ahead of TIFF reports, mind you.

The lack of regard for the poorer countries in our world and their citizens, including workers, continues. In fact, the laundry in Brampton may well include garments made in that very factory in Pakistan.
