Abstract:
LIBERATION BOOKS is an independent, non-profit co-operative, owned collectively by over 200 people, and staffed by a half-time paid co-ordinator, and dozens of volunteers. It is not affiliated with any political party or organization. The political views of its membership span the spectrum from "progressive to radical".

The shelves carry a wide range of materials including books and periodicals dealing with the Third World, politics and economics, socialist issues, fiction and poetry, women's issues, labour studies, native peoples, and general history. Also in stock are records, posters, buttons, and non-sexist literature for children.

As well as operating a bookstore, the collective frequently hosts educational seminars and film series and publishes a monthly newsletter which features the activities of groups working for progressive social change. It has recently established a Cultural Committee to "work up and elaborate a cultural program with which, as a collective, we can begin to challenge the hegemony of Capitalist Consumer Culture:. Thsoe who cannot visit the store are invited to write for the collective's labour studies catalogue and order form.

New members are always being sought. Annual fees are $10 ($5 for students). Members receiving voting rights at meetings, a subscription to the newsletter, and a 10% discount on purchases.
