Abstract:
In January, 1980, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of St. John's appointed a staff person to initiate a program of social action based on the statement of R.C. Bishops of the Atlantic provinces - "To Establish a Kingdom of Justice." During the next few months, a number of volunteers were recruited to serve as an advisory board, and in September, a second staff coordinator was hired. The activities of the Commission during the past year have included the following:
1) intensive contact with several parishes in the Placentia area; this resulted in
the establishment of the Argentia Area Development Association, which aims to involve the people of the area in planning for oil and gas-related development;
2) co-sponsorship of public meetings and other events on El Salvador,
Northern Ireland, and Bill C-48;
3) public support of striking workers at the College of Trades and Technology in
St. John's and condemnation of the Provincial Treasury Board for their refusal to negotiate with the union. The Commission also works closely with the Canadian Urban Training Project (C.U.T.) in training social action workers for Newfoundland and the Maritime provinces.
