Synthesis is the journal of the Canadian News Synthesis Project. Previously known as the Canadian News Synthesis Project (1974 - 1976), Synthesis analyzes and presents current news coverage of the most important economic, political and cultural forces in Canadian Society, using major newspapers from across the country.

The push toward a continental energy policy grows as large quantities of natural gas are discovered in western Alberta -- new deposits could delay need for Dempster spur of Alcan pipeline; should Canada increase exports of crude to the US in return for the promise that the oil will be replaced later when Canada needs it?; more oil swap talk as Energy Minister Gillespie considers building underground oil storage facilities for the US to reduce its dependence on Middle East imports; Canada imposes quota on imported footwear; US imposes a quota on Canadian zinc; Canadian Labour Congress calls for the creation of a National Labour Planning Board; new Conservative government of Manitoba suspends the Family Maintenance and Marital Property Acts passed by former NDP government; wider recognition of women's rights within marriage as partners, not property of husband.
